Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has already been the subject of a Netflix documentary, but now she’ll be making her jump to reality television.
On Thursday, VH1 announced the guest hosts for its upcoming season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” — a long-running drag competition show — listing the freshman House Democrat among other big names like actress and “The View” moderator Whoopi Goldberg and hip-hop musician Nicki Minaj.
In a promotional tweet for the upcoming season, Ocasio-Cortez says, “Join the ru-volution. I’m Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and I pledge allegiance to the drag.”
The congresswoman herself tweeted that being part of the show “was absolutely, 100% a peak experience” and that she was “SO excited for the new season.”
Ocasio-Cortez is no stranger to the drag scene. She has made headlines for attending drag shows while in office and, after one, previously said that it would be here “dream” to appear as a guest on the reality competition program.
The democratic congresswoman wouldn’t be the only high-profile Democratic House member to appear on the show. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) appeared on an episode of the program in 2018. At the time, Pelosi said that politicians could learn “authenticity” from drag queens.
“Taking pride in who you are. Knowing your power — that’s what I talk about on my brief segment on the show,” Pelosi told the Hollywood Reporter. “This idea of people believing in themselves, being themselves, taking pride in themselves, is not just a lesson for politicians but for everyone in the country. And that’s why I was so excited and couldn’t resist being on the show.”
In the network’s trailer for the upcoming season, which starts Feb. 28, Ocasio-Cortez can be seen telling one contestant, “I’m so thankful that you’re part of our country” and telling another, “I think you’re fabulous.”
