Whenever one sees that Rep. Ilhan Omar has gone viral these days, the odds are better than not that it involves some sort of gaffe. And while a clip of the Minnesota Democrat decrying the wages that McDonald’s workers receive initially went viral because it made her liberal fans happy, it quickly became apparent she had no idea what she was talking about.

In fact, her economics were so off that actor Dean Cain — who may have played Superman but certainly isn’t Milton Friedman when it comes to the dismal science — was able to rip it to shreds.

The clip in question came Thursday when Terrence Wise — a Missouri McDonald’s shift manager who has been active in the “Fight for $15” movement — was being questioned by Omar during congressional testimony.

“So the median pay for a McDonald’s worker was $7,000 in 2017,” she said. “And that is the pay gap between the CEO that’s making $21.8 (million) to the $7,000 that a worker who has put in 40 hours a (week) gets paid.

“To me, that just morally does not sit well.”

Omar posted the clip on Twitter along with a stronger statement: “This is a moral outrage. We need a $15 minimum wage so that no one is paid a poverty wage.”

Cain, an outspoken conservative, noticed a few problems with this proposition.

“At $11/hr. your math ain’t making any sense,” he tweeted. “Unless that dude works only 15 weeks of a year. And flipping burgers not quite the same as being CEO.”

First, a good reason those numbers don’t sound right: The median pay for a McDonald’s worker isn’t determined by the pay for a worker in the United States.

Omar likely got the statistic from a May 7, 2018, Associated Press story on the pay gap between CEOs and employees: “McDonald’s Corp. CEO Steve Easterbrook was paid almost $22 million last year, while the company’s median employee received around $7,000 annually. The fast-food company has the largest ratio in Illinois at 3,101 to 1.”

Denuded from the context was just what a “median employee” was.

“McDonald’s defines a median employee as a part-time hourly restaurant crew member in Poland, where wages are lower than in the U.S. and it didn’t use any of the exclusions allowed,” the AP story continued.

“Companies, like McDonald’s, with global workforces and that rely on part-time or temporary employees tend to have higher pay gaps. Easterbrook’s pay is also based on company performance, and the company’s value grew $36 billion last year.”

Even the AP’s wording was somewhat misleading, but Omar’s remarks went well beyond that — saying that someone working 40 hours a week at $11 an hour would end up with that $7,000. It didn’t take long for Twitter to pile on.

For the record, $11 an hour times 40 hours per week times 52 weeks in a year equals $22,880, not $7,000.

While this probably isn’t Omar’s worst gaffe thus far (I think her tweet about the poor Black Hebrew Israelites — members of a racist organization — getting harassed by Covington Catholic High School has to take the cake), this is certainly up there. Surely someone on her staff could have run the numbers?

But that’s the thing about the new Democrats. They operate by a motto that’s an inverse of conservative commentator Ben Shapiro’s trademark phrase: Feelings don’t care about your facts. Liberals feel for low-wage workers and don’t like CEOs, no matter how much low-wage workers are worth to a company or how much value CEOs may add.

Therefore, these numbers might be wrong, but they don’t feel wrong.

It’s the same way they know that $15 is the perfect minimum wage. This isn’t from studies, mind you (which show a $15 minimum wage kills jobs, especially given automation), but seemingly from the fact that it’s a nice, round number and the “Fight for $15” is alliterative.

With logic like that, we should get ready to see a lot of this from Omar in the coming years. More’s the pity.

If the blacks in Africa score an average of 70 on an IQ test I’ll bet muslims are not over 60 and Muslim women are probably around 50. They are retarded. They don’t need to know much as long as they can cook a goat their husband probably won’t kill them.

a huge percentage of them are inbred, as well. And before anyone starts screaming-no, that’s not racist. It is a fact. Look up the effects of inbreeding and you’ll understand muslim behavior a lot better. Good old Ilhan Omar married her own brother, as a matter of fact. Did they sleep together?? I don’t know and I don’t want to know. It’s still disgusting, either way.

This America hating muzlim moron, like Alexandria Occasionally Cognizant, is a plant by George Soros thru one of his 206 ‘organizations’ in the USA that he intends to take down America by using his pawns in government. How else would a bar tender from the Bronx and this nobody from a muzlim enclave in MN get elected? Massive funding thru got them there. The utter stupidity of these ‘freshmen’ morons is astounding.

Most of our McDonald’s have cut employees because of wage hikes. They’ve installed machines for taking orders instead of cashiers. Walmart has done the same thing. So while raising pay rates are great the jobs that use to be available to teenagers have dropped and most are taken by older people supplimenting their social security in our area. Unless you’re a minority living in the city where job services are numerous the people in the high end of poverty in the suburban areas get no help with job training for the higher paid jobs and now they can’t get a job at McDonald’s or Walmart.

I welcome the change to older workers. These teenagers have no work ethics. My husband went to get a carry out order for our dinner tonight. One of the new hires had been taking a phone order, she laid the phone down, clocked out and left in the middle of her shift. I assume that she lost her job over it but I’m sure that she didn’t care. Our local McDonalds has almost all teen workers, it takes 25 minutes to get a cheeseburger and they still get the order wrong. These lazy workers don’t deserve to get anything over minimum wage.

Here is the thing though also. McDonald’s restaurants are franchises, which means they are individually owned by a private citizen. So depending on the area of the country and the profits that particular McDonalds makes, pay for employees will differ. Also, if you are the CEO of a company, that means you run everything. This woman is pushing communistic ideals when she thinks wealth should be distributed theis way.

Have you noticed that as Democrats press for a $15 / hr. minimum wage McDonalds, et. al., are replacing workers with kiosks? So, liberals, instead of the workers making $11 / hr. which is generous for an entry-level position, they are now making $0 / hr. because of your insistence on paying these positions an unaffordable wage structure. Let’s do the math for Rep Omar’s Common Core math: $11 / hr. X 40 hrs X 52 weeks = $22,880. Sure, that’s not $21.8 M, but he’s not the CEO. Obviously Rep. Omar has never run so much as a fruit stand and has no concept of economics. Oh, I forgot: “Economics” doesn’t make her “feel good”.

If $15 an hour is minimum wage (assuming all the same across the country), then these people will still be paid only minimum wage and lifestyles will balance out and adjust to “minimum wage” no matter what it is. If you really want to make it big, quit thinking small and minimum. If your only hope in life is to flip burgers at a fast food joint and fold clothes at Walmart, then that is all you are going to get. Period. BE more, Do more, Get more. Impress the heck out of those around you. They will be impressed and help you rise to your potential or they will feel threatened by you and fire you and you can go on to better things anyway. YOU are the reason you get raises, not a Federal mandate of minimums.
