Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) is one of President Donald Trump’s most persistent political opponents, as the driving force behind investigations into the president and a leading advocate for impeachment.
Last month, however, President Trump put all that aside when Nadler was hospitalized after a health scare. Nadler was at an event on May 24 at a Manhattan school promoting speed cameras with Mayor Bill De Blasio when he began feeling faint. He had to be transported by ambulance to the hospital.
That’s when he got an unexpected call. Yahoo News reported:
A member of Nadler’s staff who would only speak on the condition of anonymity said Trump called Nadler from Air Force One as he was on his way to Japan.
The two men had last spoken in 2017, about the Gateway project, a series of long-planned upgrades to train tunnels linking Manhattan to New Jersey and serving the entire Northeast Corridor.
Trump now told Nadler that he had seen him on television, and that he thought Nadler was “tough.” Trump repeated that assessment several times, adding that he wished the congressman well and wanted to know if he could do anything more. The two men did not discuss politics or impeachment, according to a person familiar with the call.
According to Yahoo, Trump and Nadler have been political rivals since the 1980s when the then-real estate mogul Trump was trying to get a project moving in Nadler’s district. Nadler, bolstered by community opposition, squashed it.
Now, Nadler is leading the push to investigate the president for potential obstruction of justice, and is a leader among members of the House of Representatives who believes Democrats should impeach Trump.
The good will did not last long, as now that Nadler is back on his feet he is continuing to pursue hearings related to Trump and the now-completed Russia investigation.
